Robot to help lost passenger


The robots find its use widely in almost all the field - production units, medical field, educational field. One can easily find them everywhere. Apart from the research field, humanoid robots are designed to perform the tasks for the human that can't be easily and safely done by them. Robots can be used to perform operational (repetitive) as well as dangerous jobs. Robotic researchers are working continuously in developing the robots which can assist humans in different areas. This article will throw light on some of the assistant robots that are either in the development stage or already helping the humans. There are many assistant robots which are already assisting human being, take any of the field and you will find the robots.

You know Spencer? Spencer is new employee of the Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport. This robot has been developed to help lost passengers at the airport to find their way. Spencer project is the result of the collaboration between Sweden’s Örebro University, Dutch airline KLM, and researchers from five different nations funded by the European Commission. Spencer’s protocol is to help passengers to move through the confusing paths of airport. Achim Lilienthal, project leader of Spencer tells “Navigating an airport is challenging, there is a lot of glass and a constantly changing environment in terms of temporary obstructions, such as parked luggage trolleys and people everywhere…It is surprisingly difficult to fit all the pieces together. A small error somewhere along the line may take an unpredictably long time to discover and work out.”

From 30th November 2015, the robot is placed at Schiphol airport for the trial purpose. After trial for one month the adjustments and preparations will be made in it to deploy for final testing in the month of March. Researchers from Orebro have identified the pre-requisite for navigation of the robot is to load the map of the airport in it. The spencer is equipped with laser beams, through which it scans the area from a distance and finds out the relative distance of the obstructions from it.

Team of Spencer project feels that to navigate through moving peoples is not difficult but the main problem is to traverse through temporarily permanent obstructions. Other hands on application areas are also foreseen by Lilienthal, like the person who had missed his flight and has a lot of time to spend waiting for the time of the next desired flight, the robot can be fed with constructive information regarding the exact updated details for different flights. And in this there will be a less chance of mistake and delay as compared to the humans. Along with that it can communicate in several languages with passengers.
